| Dear Fritz, Happy Day from the Crescent City! Last week WWOZ was feeling the love in Los Angeles when the Grammy Foundation produced a pre-Grammy event, "New Orleans Rising" in which I had the privilege to speak to a packed house of thousands about WWOZ. The program featured Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Ivan Neville, among others, and was hosted by Harry Shearer. The next day the Grammy Foundation notified WWOZ that it was making a kick-off contribution to WWOZ's Archive Restoration and Preservation Project. The Foundation described itself as a "Preservation Partner.” If you watched the 48th annual Grammy Awards Show you saw that Jazz Fest 2006, New Orleans and some of New Orleans’ own, Dr. John, Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint figured prominently into the on-air festivities. Read more about it on the Grammy Foundation website: Speaking of Jazz Fest, the date is set and we’d love to see you there! That’s right, April 28 30 and May 5 7 an historic New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will take place at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The music line up is being finalized as I write. Suffice it to say, Jazz Fest 2006 will be celebrated with a spirit and vibe like no other Fest in history. Don’t miss it. Your generous support is what keeps OZ going strong. Now, when you pledge $300 or more you can receive a Jazz Fest Brass Pass. You’ll find more details below. As always, thank you for your generous support of WWOZ. Yours in loveology, David Freedman WWOZ General Manager P.S. We don't have a budget for advertising so we need you to help spread the love. Tell your friends and colleagues about the music you love on WWOZ and remind them that the station can't live. |

W E B L O G Working with the weblog for two weeks now and I see a lot advantages and opportunities. Would be nice if we could replace the newsletter by it. It is getting harder and harder to get information to people by email. Messages get stopped by spam filters or people get so much mails that they stop reading them. With a weblog I always have the latest news available and I don’t have to bother people with emails. Also they can read the information when and where they want. I will keep it updated daily including new pictures and sound samples. If you visit once or twice a week you will always know exactly what is going on with the artists, Crossroads and Black and Tan Records. Just go to http://www.crossroads.nl/weblog/weblog.html Since this is a Work In Progress all feedback is appreciated. Roscoe and the musicians had a ball for three days. The result are 14 or 15 great songs (50 % originals). The approach is very intimate and acoustic and on these recordings you’ll find several instruments (cajon, mandoline, trash can, tenor guitar etc) that you won’t find on blues records very often. The mixing and mastering will take place later this month and release is scheduled for end of March / April 2006. R E S U L T S F R O M M I D E M The Black and Tan catalogue was already present in most of the major download portals like Itunes, Emusic, MSN Music etc but at Midem I signed with another digital distributor who will make the catalogue available for the smaller and more specialized download platforms. As far as I am concerned Internet is a blessing for independent labels and artists because it creates lots of new ways to get your music to the fans all over the world. It makes us really independent from major record labels and media, that don't care much about handmade music. And there are more results of my visit to MIDEM last month. last week I secured distribution for Black and Tan Records in Norway, Sweden and Finland. For Finland I start work with D D Records and in Norway / Sweden with PS Music. I also send the first shipment to my brand new Hungarian distributor (CD Field BT). This means that pretty soon the music fans in these countries should be able to get all Black and Tan releases in their local record stores. R O S C O E C H E N I E R tour dates 08.02. "MOST IMPORTANT JAZZ FEST IN HISTORY" SET FOR APRIL 28-30 AND MAY 5-7, 2006 Fans From Around the World Invited Back to New Orleans to Celebrate The Soul of America and to Be a Part of the City’s Recovery
Jazz Fest Producer/Director Quint Davis said, “We’re dedicating this year’s Festival to the people of New Orleans and inviting everybody who cares about this city to come to Jazz Fest and play a meaningful role in bringing back the city’s culture, which is the soul of America. Jazz Fest 2006 will be a homecoming party for thousands of New Orleans musicians, Festival chefs and craftspeople, and we want the world to join us in welcoming them back as we present the celebration of a lifetime.” Sponsorship of this year’s Festival, according to Davis, is one of the major reasons why the Festival is happening as planned. “In light of the great financial challenges of presenting the 2006 Festival on the grand scale everyone is accustomed to, we simply could not have produced Jazz Fest without unprecedented corporate support from Shell, who becomes the Festival’s first-ever Presenting Sponsor.” “Today is about the people of greater New Orleans,” said Executive Vice President Marvin E. Odum, who heads Shell Exploration & Production in North and South America. “The homecoming of Jazz Fest is a key component to restoring the unique cultural fabric of New Orleans. Shell is honored to have the opportunity to help energize greater New Orleans and its rich music traditions.” American Express and Tenet Choices, Inc. will also be important corporate partners for Jazz Fest 2006 and are helping to make the event a reality. This is the first step in a series of initiatives American Express will undertake to help promote the culture and stimulate the economic recovery of New Orleans. Davis thanked the Fair Grounds Race Course (A Churchill Downs Company), a longtime sponsor of Jazz Fest, who he said stepped in very early in the planning phases of this year's Festival and made the vital commitment to prepare the site in time for the event to occur. Shell is the Presenting Sponsor of the Festival. American Express, Tenet Choices, Inc., Acura, Miller Lite, Fair Grounds Race Course (A Churchill Downs Company), Southern Comfort, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Rajen Kilachand, Zatarain's, St. Charles Vision are all also official Jazz Fest sponsors. Randy Phillips, President and CEO of AEG LIVE, which co-produces the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, said, “Last year, AEG LIVE and Festival Productions, formed an effective partnership to revitalize one of our country's premier heritage events. After hurricane Katrina, Jazz Fest took an even greater meaning and urgency as a symbol of the rebirth of the great city of New Orleans. We are thrilled to, again, be part of music and cultural history in the making.” Flanked by numerous public officials and corporate partners at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Davis said that New Orleans and state of Louisiana tourism representatives all agree that the Festival will play a critical role in helping to jumpstart the city’s all-important tourism industry. Jazz Fest will be the first major tourism event occurring over dates when a substantial number of hotel rooms will be available for visitors to New Orleans, and Festival-goers will be an important part of the city’s early recovery. Tickets for Jazz Fest go on sale today at www.nojazzfest.com and www.ticketmaster.com, at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling (800) 488-5252 (outside Louisiana) and (504) 522-5555 (New Orleans). Tickets can be purchased in person at the Jazz Fest ticket office located at New Orleans Arena, 1501 Girod Street. In a limited-time only offer, tickets to either Jazz Fest Friday are only $20 from today through Wednesday, February 15. Also starting today, Jazz Fest tickets are on sale by specific weekend, with each ticket valid for a single day’s attendance. Prices are $30 in advance, $40 at the gate. Children’s tickets (under age 12) are only $5 in advance or at the gate.
