Otis Clay Invited To Perform At Rock and Roll Museum's Tribute To Sam Cooke Blind Pig recording artist Otis Clay is among a select group of artists to be invited by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland to participate in a week long Tribute to Sam Cooke. The event marks the 10th Anniversary of their American Masters Series that celebrates the life and work of important artists. Sam Cooke, considered by many to be the definitive soul singer and crossover artist, a model for African-American entrepreneurship and one of the first performers to use music as a tool for social change, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 1986. The Tribute to Sam Cooke will run from October 31 to November 6 and will feature panels, films, educational programs, a day-long conference and will culminate in a secular concert on Saturday, Nov. 5 spotlighting Cooke's pop and R&B material and a gospel concert on Nov. 6 that will focus on his spiritual music. Otis Clay, who has both R&B and gospel titles on Blind Pig, will perform at both concerts. Other confirmed artists include Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Aretha Franklin and Elvis Costello, plus Taj Mahal, The Blind Boys of Alabama,The Dixie Hummingbirds, Lou Rawls, Solomon Burke, Cissy Houston, William Bell and original Soul Stirrer, Leroy Crume. Blind Pig released Respect Yourself, a live album of Otis Clay's performance of soul and R&B at the Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland earlier this year. The label has also released The Gospel Truth, a best-selling album of Clay's gospel material. Dear Friedrich, First, blues friends, we missed something that fell below the radar due to Hurricane Katrina ....well, let's make up for that by saying: "Rest In Peace", Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown !  Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, the singer and guitarist who became famous with juke-joint stomp numbers and built a 50-year career playing blues, country, jazz and Cajun music, died Saturday, Septemer 10, 2005 at the age of 81 in his hometown of Orange, Texas. He had gone there to escape Hurricane Katrina from his home in Slidell, a bedroom community of New Orleans, which was destroyed by Katrina and wiped out much of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans.Mr. Brown, who had been battling lung cancer and heart disease, was in ill health for the past year..he was with his family at his brother’s house when he died. His career first took off in the 1940s with blues hits “Okie Dokie Stomp” and “Ain’t That Dandy”. By the end of his career, Gatemouth had more than 30 recordings and won a Grammy award in 1982. RIP !
