Dear Friedrich,
Well folks, it's the 'dawg days' of Summer and the State Fair continues on it's yearly run. Mick Martin & The Blues Rockers and Terry Hanck & His Allstars with 'Kid' Andersen are still providing great blues at the "Blues & Brews" stage. Young Shane Tiller, Jr. is there during the weekend.
Speaking of dawgs, The Beer Dawgs have returned from their vacation and can be seen once again in their usual haunts.
This Friday night the Heritage Festival folks are presenting an outdoor "Under The Stars" show that features Buckwheat Zydeco and Stymie & The Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra at the Horseman’s Club (doors open at 7:00 PM). If you attended the Heritage Festival last June, you already know Stymie & group can really entertain!
On Saturday, the big show in the area is the Sierra Blues Benefest & Craft Fair in Old Town Auburn. This year's fundraiser is for the Auburn Community Cancer Endowment Fund and has a great line-up of blues performers on two stages. Speaking from experience, this is always a great time.
Thank you to everyone that attended the SBS show featuring Michael Burks, The Jeff Watson Band and The Equinox Blues Review with Grant Urias on Sunday! Also, a special 'THANKS' to Mike Aguilar and the fine folks at the Stoney Inn Bar & Grill for providing a wonderful place for this show!

Blues Matters Review
Liverpool Blues and Roots Festival
Upcoming Gigs

Dear Fans and Well-wishers,

Filming at Colne
Thanks to all who contacted me regarding the filming of our concert at the Great British R&B Festival in Colne next weekend. Thanks to Ecom Preston, everything is going ahead as planned. The only difference is that we will not be putting the concert on the Internet live. Owen McGough of Ecom convinced me that the end result would be much better if the footage from the various cameras was edited afterwards. This also avoids the considerable challenge of ‘live streaming’. However, a beautifully edited film of the concert should be available in 2 or 3 weeks, both on the internet, probably hosted by a new site called New Band UK (another one of Owen McGough’s projects) and on DVD. We hope to give you more details in our next newsletter.

Meanwhile, I invite everyone to join us for the filming. The Municipal Hall in Colne is a stunning building and we are pulling all the stops out to make the concert an event to remember. Tickets for the whole festival with many wonderful artists and bands are available from the website www.bluesfestival.co.uk or call 01282 661234.

Weed Music Files
Weed is an exciting new concept where you can download music and are given a license that allows you to listen to each song 3 times for free. After the third listen, you can either opt to delete the file or you can buy it (at $0.99). The cool thing is that you can send a link to the song to everyone you know and they can all listen to it too, at CD quality, while you receive a commission if they buy it.

I intend to make a weed file of a different GILES song available via every newsletter from now on, and future ones will also include songs that are scheduled for the next album. It’s a great way for us to get feedback on songs before they are officially released, and you get to listen to them before anyone else!

The first song we have made available is ‘So Much Pain’ from our latest ‘Blue Funk’ album. It is a funky blues song with a passionate wah solo and a strong message. I hope you like it and I would love to get your feedback  on it. I would also like your feedback on the weed concept itself. Do you think it is a good idea?

Here is the link for the song
http://www.streamload.com/beAudible/-weed-Giles-So%20Much%20Pain.wma.
Just click on it for the whole song at CD quality and the rest should be self-explanatory.

Happy Weeding!

Blues Matters review
Darren Howells of Blues Matters reviewed our gig at the 12 Bar in Preston:
“Anyone who has heard GILES’ recent album ‘Blue Funk’ will testify to just what an exceptional outfit they are [… ] Fortunately all the vitality and intelligence of ‘Blue Funk’ is transferred perfectly in tact to a live setting […] and those in attendance were clearly pleased that they’d been privileged to be in the presence of a band with such class and originality (and possibly a little surprised at HOW good they were!)”
Cheers Darren!

EG TO SING NATIONAL ANTHEM FOR LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES!
Our own Georgia Songbird will be singing the National Anthem at the Little League World Series on August 22nd in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.  The game is scheduled to be telecast on ESPN at 8:00 p.m. EST.  Most of the games in this series will also be broadcast on WRAK-AM in Williamsport. The National Anthem may or may not be shown on television, but we’ll all be tuned in to find out!

EG LIVE ON KING BISCUIT TIME
On Friday, September 2nd, EG will appear live with Sonny Payne on King Biscuit Time on KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. King Biscuit Time is the longest running daily radio show in history, and continues to be broadcast daily on Delta Broadcasting's KFFA 1360 AM in Helena, Arkansas. First broadcast on November 21, 1941, King Biscuit Time featured legendary Blues artists Sonny Boy Williamson and Robert Jr. Lockwood playing live in the studio.  EG is honored to be invited onto the show.

GREAT REVIEW IN TAYLOR GUITARS MAGAZINE!
“Whenever a blues artist comes along with something fresh and personal to say, it’s cause for celebration.  Let us now celebrate EG Kight, a woman who eschews the clichéd methodology too often endemic to the genre in lieu of her own uniquely rural, deeply personal sound and style.”  To read the entire review, click on the link and go to page 27.

http://www.taylorguitars.com/news/community/ws_summer_2005.pdf

ANOTHER RECENT REVIEW
E.G. wins over the crowd even before beginning her performance, based solely on her warm, outgoing personality.  Once she begins to sing, the hook is set.  E.G. Kight is the consummate performer, with the ability to read a crowd, the repertoire to give them what they want, and the ability to pull it off with style.

Little Milton Dies at 71
Influential bluesman recorded for Sun, Chess and Stax

Blues Hall of Famer Little Milton, who combined the tough electric blues sound of the early 1950s with the punchy, showtime arrangements of R&B, soul and funk, died in Memphis yesterday (August 4) of complications from two recent strokes. He was seventy.

James Milton Campbell Jr. was born September 7, 1934, in Inverness, Mississippi. As a child he was enthralled with the local guitarists who played at his stepfather's house parties. "I'd be tucked in bed," he once recalled, "but the minute that the guy would hit the guitar, they'd look around and I'd be standing there, little long drawers on." By the age of fifteen, he was performing in a juke joint said to have been owned by B.B. King's mother-in-law.

Dear Friedrich,
The Sacramento Blues Society has received an offer of a 20% discount on B.B. King: There Is Always One More Time.
Blues Legend - B.B. King
On September 16, 2005, blues legend B.B. King will celebrate his 80th birthday, and Backbeat Books will mark this milestone with the publication of B.B King: There Is Always One More Time.
The book combines biography and discography, charting B.B. King's life from his childhood in rural Mississippi up to his first studio session. Each album in print of King's distinguished career is analyzed and critiqued. There are first-hand interviews with producers and key musicians that bring the story of these sessions and recording to life.
In this book, author David McGee shows how B.B. King persevered in his quest to bring the blues to a wider audience, chronicling the studio experiments that led him to broaden his sound and expand the very definition of the blues. The book narrates fascinating career and life events, from the wild fistfight that led King to christen his guitar "Lucille" and his participation in the 1974 Ali-Foreman match known as the "Rumble in the Jungle," to the recording of his signature song "The Thrill Is Gone" and his relationships with music heavyweights like Doc Pomus, Dr. John and Eric Clapton.
$14.36
(you can use this link)

This discounted offer is only available until B.B.'s birthday, September 16, 2005, and only via the web site!

Howlin’ Wolf Blues Museum to open on Festival weekend

WEST POINT, MS. --- The Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society of West Point, Mississippi will officially open the new Howlin’ Wolf Blues Museum on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at 2:00 PM. The Howlin’ Wolf Museum is located at the corner of Westbrook and Mill Streets in downtown West Point. It is a joint project of the West Point Community Foundation and the Blues Society. The grand opening will feature live music by Rev. Slick and Blind Mississippi Morris celebrating the life and music of Chester Arthur “Howlin’ Wolf” Burnett. The event is free and open to the public.

Every year the small northeast Mississippi town of West Point honors their famous blues man with a memorial festival which presents top blues talent and attracts many well known people in the music industry. The new blues museum represents an expansion of the Blues Society’s offerings and will create an added attraction not only for tourists attending the festival but as a year-round destination for fans of Mississippi blues. Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society director Richard Ramsey stated, “We have worked very hard and are pleased to open the museum just before and during the weekend of the 10th annual Blues Festival. We have had a flood of donations by private citizens, the Burnett family, famous musicians, and the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame to prepare as museum exhibits and we are thrilled at the collection of memorabilia. We are very honored to establish this museum in Wolf’s hometown and eager to preserve these treasures and share them with the world.”

To find more information on the Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society, the museum, and the annual blues festival, please visit the West Point, Ms. website at www.wpnet.org and view the section dedicated to Howlin’ Wolf!

The Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society of West Point, Mississippi Inc. is a state chartered non-profit corporation established in 1995. The society may be contacted via email c/o Richard Ramsey rramsey@wpnet.org or by mail at P.O. Box 1334 – West Point, MS. 39773

Thank you for this great NEWS from Mississippi !
